RørosHetta’s recommendations for a safe kitchen environment

A safe kitchen is about more than pleasant cooking aromas and smart solutions – it is also about preventing fire hazards and ensuring a healthy indoor climate. Small everyday choices, combined with the right equipment and maintenance, can make a big difference. This checklist gives you eight simple and effective ways to create a safer, more functional kitchen.

Maintain proper humidity levels
Excess humidity can cause mould growth, while too little humidity leads to a poor indoor climate. With the RørosHetta SENSE app, you can monitor humidity levels in the room and adjust accordingly. You will receive notifications in the app if the level becomes too high.

Install a stove guard
Automatically cuts the power if the temperature becomes too high or if something is left on the stove for too long. With RørosHetta SENSE, you can have a stove guard integrated directly into the cooker hood, using four sensors that measure temperature, movement, power consumption and time to assess fire risk. If you do not have a Sense hood, you can choose a wall- or ceiling-mounted stove guard.

Choose fire-retardant materials around the stove
Tiles, steel or fire-rated panels reduce the risk of ignition.

Use an induction cooktop
Induction reduces heat generation and is generally safer than traditional cooktops or gas stoves. RørosHetta’s downdraft ventilators ensure efficient ventilation and are delivered with an induction cooktop. Choose between widths of 60–80 cm.

Ensure sufficient and correct ventilation – avoid blocking vents
This provides controlled, clean air and removes moisture, cooking fumes and pollutants more effectively than natural ventilation. Avoid painting over or blocking other ventilation openings in the home – these are common mistakes that can lead to poor air quality and increased moisture levels.

Clean and maintain the kitchen hood regularly
Grease in the hood increases fire risk and reduces air quality. Clean the grease filter regularly, preferably once a month, and replace it if it becomes worn or starts to deteriorate.
Replace the charcoal filter at the recommended interval – its lifespan can vary from 4 months to more than 4 years. We recommend setting a reminder in your calendar.
With RørosHetta Sense, you receive app notifications when it’s time to clean the grease filters and replace the charcoal filter.

Use an extractor directly above the stove with the correct capacity
Make sure your cooker hood is as wide as or wider than the cooktop to ensure optimal capture of cooking fumes. Ducted ventilation is recommended where direct exhaust is possible. Alternatively, we offer cooker hoods adapted to all types of ventilation systems.

Ensure proper ventilation after cooking
RørosHetta Sense hoods and downdraft ventilators feature an after-ventilation setting that ventilates the ducts after cooking is finished. It runs quietly at level 1 to avoid unnecessary noise and reduces the risk of cooking odours, grease and moisture remaining in the duct. After-ventilation starts automatically when the cooktop is turned off.

Our best tips to keep your kitchen hood top-quality

Let’s kick-start the new year by summarizing our top 6 tips for a perfectly maintained kitchen hood!

The kitchen hood is an essential part of the kitchen, but it is located in an environment that easily becomes both greasy and stained. Especially after Christmas, when both the hood and the kitchen are exposed to increased cooking, odors and grease.

Maintaining the kitchen hood is important to preserve both functionality and appearance. A slightly more thorough cleaning can therefore pay off after the Christmas rush. Should you also be unfortunate enough to experience a stain or scratch on your hood, there are several solutions to deal with this.

Here are our best tips and advice on how you can maintain and care for your kitchen hood.

Regular cleaning

To keep the kitchen hood clean and in good condition, it should be cleaned regularly. Use a damp cloth and mild soapy water. It is important to remove grease as quickly as possible, as it becomes more difficult to clean over time. Grease can also cause unpleasant odours and reduce the efficiency of the hood. Avoid using microfibre cloths on high-gloss metal, as this can cause small scratches in the surface.

Most grease filters from RørosHetta can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Rinse them well in hot water, then wash at 50 degrees.

Remember to change the carbon filter

Our carbon filters have a lifespan of anywhere from 4 months to 4–5 years. If it has been a long time since you have changed it, it may be a good idea to do so now.

Treatment of metal surfaces

Our high-gloss metal hoods are treated with an anti-fingerprint treatment to improve the durability of the metal and prevent grease stains from fingers from sticking to the hood. For brushed metals, it may be beneficial to use impregnation agents after cleaning. This gives the metal an extra layer of protection and can help extend the life and appearance of the hood.

Handling scratches

If you get scratches on your hood, a stain remover can be a good solution. To find the right color, it is recommended that you take a picture of the label located on the inside of the grease filter. The label contains a serial number that makes it easier for us to find the right color for you.

RørosHetta Sense can make your home safer

What a stove guard does

A stove guard typically consists of a sensor and a control unit. The sensor monitors the cooktop — for example temperature, power consumption, and movement — and issues a warning in hazardous situations. If no one responds, the control unit cuts the power to the stove to prevent a fire.
In Norway, a stove guard is required in new homes and when modifying the stove’s electrical circuit during renovations. The EN 50615 standard ensures that stove guards react quickly enough and are stable enough to avoid false alarms.

RørosHetta Sense – an integrated and intelligent solution

RørosHetta has developed the Sense stove guard, which is built into the sensor panel of the kitchen hood. This makes the solution both discreet and effective.

Key features:
• Four sensors
Sense measures temperature, power consumption, movement, and time to assess risk.
• Direct power connection
Unlike battery-powered devices, Sense is connected to the mains — avoiding battery changes and reducing the chance of failure in critical moments.
• PCU unit
A control unit (PCU) is connected to the stove by an authorized electrician. If the alarm is not reset, the PCU will shut off the power to the cooktop.
• EN 50615 compliance
The RørosHetta Sense stove guard is designed to meet the NEK/EN 50615 safety standard.

How a stove guard can save lives

Many fires start due to “dry boiling” or because the cooktop is accidentally left on — a stove guard can intervene before the situation becomes critical. If no one reacts to the alarm, the stove guard can automatically cut the power, preventing a small risk from developing into a major fire.

Practical recommendations

  1. Ensure certification
Choose a stove guard tested according to the EN 50615 standard.
  2. Have the stove guard installed by an electrician
Especially important when the device requires fixed wiring, as with the RørosHetta PCU unit.
  3. Maintenance
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning and inspection. Even the best stove guard requires overall kitchen fire safety — for example having fire-extinguishing equipment readily available.
  4. Inform everyone in the household
Everyone who uses the stove should know what the stove guard’s alert means and how to respond (e.g., pressing the “OK” button or resetting the unit).

A stove guard is a simple but highly effective fire-safety solution that reduces the risk of dangerous situations on the cooktop.
With RørosHetta Sense, you get an integrated solution that combines advanced sensor technology with automatic shut-off — without the need for batteries. This makes the kitchen safer without compromising on design or usability.

Why choose a wall-mounted kitchen hood

A wall-mounted kitchen hood from RørosHetta combines efficiency, quiet ventilation and creative design — all in a high-quality solution made with durable materials. The hood contributes to improved air quality, a clean and tidy aesthetic, and can also elevate the overall impression of your kitchen.

By choosing a hood with RørosHetta Sense, you have the opportunity to tailor the design to suit your kitchen and personal taste. Whether you want a hood that is extra wide, extra long, firetruck red, or matched to your cabinet fronts, wall color or other elements in your interior — the choice is yours.

All models come with the Sense panel integrated, ensuring optimal function no matter which design you select. Sense technology gives you automatic, quiet, and efficient ventilation at all times. If you choose Sense Pro Indoor Air Monitoring, smart sensors can also measure CO₂, particle levels, temperature, humidity, and pollution based on WHO’s indoor climate guidelines.

Advantages of a Wall-Mounted Hood

Full Overview of the Cooking Area
Sense hoods offer high capacity and low noise levels, effectively removing steam, grease and cooking odors without creating unnecessary disturbance in the kitchen. They can be custom-built up to 2 meters in length, allowing you to cover your entire cooking zone — whether your cooktop is 60 cm or 120 cm wide. Adjustable LED lighting provides excellent visibility for a comfortable working environment.

Style Meets Function

Wall-mounted hoods can serve as architectural highlights in the kitchen. For example, the Luna model is available in custom height and polished brass, which can be paired with other brass details for a cohesive look.

Our Sense hoods come in more than 20 different design variations — all customizable with your choice of PVD metal, matte or glossy lacquer, and selected models can also be combined with stained wood or the new Frame Sense with Dekton panels. With Sense, you’ll find a hood to match any style, from classic to modern, with high quality as a standard.

Easy Maintenance
The grease filters are made of metal and can easily be removed and cleaned in the dishwasher (up to 50°C). Thanks to the wall-mounted design, both the inside and outside of the hood are easily accessible for cleaning.

The RørosHetta Sense app also notifies you when it’s time to clean the grease filters or replace the charcoal filter — perfect if you opt for a recirculating ventilation solution.

If you value strong ventilation, practical features and a visually appealing kitchen, a wall-mounted hood is an excellent choice. The Sense series combines powerful performance and sleek design in a way that transforms the entire kitchen experience.

RørosHetta Sense – perhaps the world’s smartest kitchen hood

We’ve made kitchen ventilation completely worry-free. As the first manufacturer in the world, we’ve integrated smart sensors into the kitchen hood. It activates automatically and constantly adapts to the amount of cooking fumes in the room. With RørosHetta SENSE, you get tailor-made hoods down to the millimeter, offering optimal, automatic, and quiet ventilation at all times.

Worry-free kitchen ventilation

The sensor panel is discreetly integrated at the front of the hood for easy access. The sensors automatically monitor and control the hood’s functions, so you don’t have to lift a finger. SENSE hoods turn on automatically and adjust extraction power based on your cooking activity. Bonus: silent kitchen ventilation.

Integrated stove guard

The sensor unit automatically detects temperature changes on the cooktop. If it senses a potential danger (e.g., an overheating pan or lack of activity near the stove), it triggers an audible and visual alarm (the OK button blinks red).
By default, the SENSE panel triggers the alarm. For full stove guard functionality, you’ll need to purchase the PCU unit. This connects to the stove’s circuit breaker and can cut the power if no one responds to the alarm – providing advanced fire prevention directly in the hood.

RørosHetta Sense appen måler luftkvalitet og partikler

With the RørosHetta app, you can monitor your cooking, the indoor climate in the kitchen and receive notifications if the stove guard detects potentially dangerous situations.

Easy app control

SENSE hoods can be controlled via the RørosHetta app (Safera on Android/Google Play). The app isn’t required for basic use but is needed for firmware updates, setup, and advanced features.

Standard SENSE models come with SENSE WiFi, offering limited functionality.
SENSE Pro indoor climate monitoring lets you track air quality, particle levels, humidity, CO₂, and other pollutants via the app.

App features include:

  • Alarm sensitivity adjustment
  • Remote alarm notifications to your phone
  • Air quality monitoring and automatic ventilation
  • Intelligent cooking with timers and temperature control

Cleaning the grease filter

Grease filters should be cleaned monthly. If you forget, the “AUTO” light on the SENSE panel will turn orange to remind you.

Long-life carbon filters

For recirculation, use Monoblock filters, which last 4–5 years (approx. 900 hours of use).
RørosHetta always recommends ducting to the outside wherever possible.

Integrated or pull-out extractor hood – what to choose

The difference between an integrated and a pull-out kitchen hood is mainly about design, size, and functionality.

Pull-out kitchen hood

A pull-out hood is mounted under the upper cabinet and can be pulled out when in use. When not in use, it slides back in seamlessly, offering a clean, minimalist look. Slide Sense from RørosHetta is available with a 25 or 16 mm front strip and can be lacquered in a matte or glossy finish – to perfectly match your kitchen style.

Advantages of a pull-out hood:

• Space-saving: Ideal for small kitchens or upper cabinets with decorative moldings.
• Easy to use: Pull out when needed, slide back in when not.
• Cost-effective: Less expensive than advanced hood solutions.

Known disadvantages (and RørosHetta’s solution):

• Limited capacity: Usually, yes – but Slide SENSE performs nearly as well as our wall-mounted SENSE models.
• Design limitations: May not come in all shapes/metals, but you can choose custom lacquer in standard or matte gloss or brushed steel front strip.

RørosHetta Slide Sense 25 mm og 16 mm frontlist

Integrated kitchen hood

An integrated hood is built into the upper cabinet and has a fixed structure. It typically only covers the cabinet depth (30–40 cm), while a cooktop is usually 60 cm deep. Diskret SENSE offers powerful edge suction even at only 300 mm depth.

Advantages of integrated hood:

• Aesthetic: Modern and seamless – perfect for minimalist kitchens.
• Flexible mounting: Diskret SENSE can be built into custom boxes like Dekton panels.

Diskret Sense montert i boks med Dekton-plater hos Drømmekjøkkenet Molde

Diskret Sense lacquered in black built into a wall box made of Dekton panels in the color “Kelya” at Drømmekjøkkenet Molde.

Disadvantages (and solution):

• Limited reach: Edge suction in Diskret SENSE still ensures powerful ventilation.
• Design: Fixed shape, but customizable color and metal options – making it nearly invisible.

RørosHetta recommends:

• Small kitchen? Both Slide SENSE and Diskret SENSE are excellent.
• Want a discreet and affordable solution? Diskret SENSE is our most invisible hood.
• Prefer easy installation and maintenance? All SENSE models are easy to install and care for.
• Want storage above your cooktop? Both models allow space above the motor box.

Our SENSE hoods are quiet, automatic, and effective. Choose any color or metal.
Ultimately, the choice comes down to your design preferences – as prices on Slide SENSE and Diskret SENSE are similar.

Why good kitchen ventilation is important

The kitchen has become the heart of the home – it’s where we cook, gather, and enjoy time together. But did you know it’s also one of the areas where indoor air quality can be at its worst? That’s why good ventilation is especially important in the kitchen.

Here’s why – and what you can do to ensure long-lasting, effective solutions.

Eliminate cooking odors and smells

When you fry, boil, or bake, cooking fumes and odors are produced and easily spread throughout the home. Without good ventilation, these smells can stick to textiles and furniture – becoming unpleasant and hard to remove. A good kitchen hood and the right ventilation system efficiently remove cooking fumes and keep the air fresh.
The recommended setup is exhaust ventilation that leads directly outdoors. If that’s not an option, RørosHetta offers hoods compatible with all ventilation solutions – including recirculating models with carbon filters or connection to shared apartment block systems.

Avoid moisture and mold

Steam from pots and pans increases humidity in the kitchen. Excess moisture can cause condensation on windows and walls – and in the worst case, lead to mold growth. Proper ventilation prevents this and helps keep your kitchen dry and healthy over time.
Our SENSE hoods and downdraft ventilators feature automatic post-ventilation at low speed for 15 minutes after cooking – ensuring that your ventilation ducts dry properly.

Better health and comfort

Poor air can make you tired, give you headaches, and irritate your eyes and airways. In a kitchen without adequate ventilation, airborne particles and chemicals often accumulate – worsening asthma and allergies. Clean, fresh air is essential for your health and wellbeing.
With RørosHetta SENSE, the hood automatically adjusts fan speed quietly and seamlessly to ensure optimal ventilation. You can monitor air quality in the RørosHetta app and override automatic settings for extra customization.

It’s required by building regulations

Norwegian building codes require proper ventilation to ensure a healthy indoor climate. A kitchen with poor air quality may violate these regulations – which can affect resale or maintenance of your property.

What to do:

A kitchen with fresh air improves the whole home. With proper ventilation, cooking becomes more enjoyable – and your home becomes healthier.

Use a kitchen hood suited to your room and ventilation system.

Ensure a supply of fresh air – through vents or mechanical intake.

Clean or replace filters regularly.
Our carbon filters last from 4 months up to 4–5 years depending on the hood model. Most grease filters can be washed in a dishwasher at 50°C.

How to easily maintain your kitchen hood

Most of RørosHetta’s kitchen hoods are handcrafted by our skilled employees at the factory in Røros. This allows you to customize your kitchen hood to your desired dimensions, both width and height, and choose the material you prefer.

Our Sense hoods can be painted in any color with either standard or matte lacquer, delivered in your choice of PVD metal in brushed or high-gloss finishes. With our latest innovation, Frame Sense, we introduce another new material: Dekton stone slabs in 4 mm thickness.

We offer a 5-year warranty on all our hoods, which you can read more about here.

If you happen to get a scratch or damage on your hood, don’t worry—there are solutions available.

A kitchen hood is used in an environment that often becomes greasy and stained. To maintain the appearance and functionality of the hood, regular maintenance is essential and can easily be incorporated into your existing cleaning routines.

Material Selection and Treatment

Kitchen hoods with metal finishes are treated with an anti-fingerprint coating to improve durability and reduce visible fingerprints.

Hoods with a brushed metal finish can be treated with an impregnation agent after cleaning to extend the life of the PVD coating. Note that the color may darken slightly after application.

Cleaning Your Kitchen Hood

All kitchen hoods should be cleaned regularly with a damp cloth and mild soapy water. If grease sits for too long, it will adhere more firmly and become harder to remove.

The Dekton plates in Frame Sense are supplied by Cosentino. We recommend reading their cleaning and maintenance tips for Dekton surfaces here.

RørosHetta Frame Sense med Dekton-plater og kobber ramme

Products with high-gloss PVD metal require extra caution; these should not be cleaned with a microfiber cloth, as it may cause small scratches. If you get a scratch or damage in the metal, or if you simply wish to change the appearance of your kitchen hood, you can easily purchase a new cover for our Sense hoods manufactured after 2021.

If you’re interested in learning more, you can contact customer service for more information.

Handling Scratches and Damage

If you get a scratch on a lacquered surface, it may be possible to repair it using touch-up paint available for order from us.

To ensure the correct color, we recommend taking a picture of the label inside the hood (remove the grease filters and possibly the carbon filter to find the label). Send us the serial number indicated, and we will assist you with the rest.

Replacing the Ventilation Duct

Kitchen hoods can have a lifespan of anywhere from 10 to 20 years (or even longer), depending on usage and maintenance. If you wish to replace your kitchen hood for any reason, we strongly recommend also replacing the flexible ventilation duct at the same time.

Over time, a significant amount of grease accumulates in the duct, which is both a fire hazard and unhygienic. A new duct will ensure better airflow and reduce the risk of fire.

By following these maintenance tips, you can extend the lifespan of your kitchen hood and ensure a cleaner and safer kitchen environment.

Stay on trend with RørosHetta Sense

Over the past five years, interior color trends have evolved from cool, minimalist tones to warmer, more inviting shades. Our SENSE hoods can be painted in any color, in both standard and matte finishes, so you can choose exactly the expression that suits you and your home.

We have seen trends shift from gray and beige with a cool Scandinavian feel in 2020 to a more colorful and personal expression in recent years. Dark and light colors have alternated, including pastels, earthy tones, and rust hues. Today’s trend points towards more personal, cozy, and colorful homes, blending modern and vintage influences.

If you want to add a personal touch to your home, the kitchen can be the finishing touch. With countless options for fronts, colors, handles, and finishes for your kitchen design, it only makes sense that the kitchen hood should seamlessly blend into the final result—whether it’s ceiling-integrated, freestanding, wall-mounted, or discreetly integrated into the upper cabinet.

By choosing a SENSE hood from RørosHetta, you can customize it to exactly the width, height, color, or metal finish you desire while maintaining the outstanding features that ensure quiet, automatic, and optimized ventilation at all times.

«Color drenching»

If you want to add a personal touch to your home, the kitchen can be the finishing touch. With countless options for fronts, colors, handles, and finishes for your kitchen design, it only makes sense that the kitchen hood should seamlessly blend into the final result.

In 2025, we see a shift towards fresher shades and lighter pastels in interiors, with “color drenching” becoming a popular interior trend.

How about painting the kitchen hood in a color that harmonizes with the walls, fronts, or door frames in your home to create a red (or green, pink, blue, turquoise, black, or brown) thread in your interior?

No matter what idea you have in mind, we can make it happen.
